Sensei Mullen has been practicing Japanese and Chinese martial arts since 1978. His past instructors include such notables as Sensei Fumio Demura and Sifu Harvey Kurland. His current instructor is Headmaster Brian Allen of the Allen Academy in Riverside, California. He has been training under Headmaster Allen since 1999. Other systems that Sensei Mullen has studied include Shito-Ryu Karate, Kuang Ping Tai Chi Chuan, Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, Jeet Kune Do, and Shinsho Kempo Jujitsu. Sensei Mullen is currently involved in an intensive study of the Southern Shaolin Snake Fist system with Headmaster Allen.

Sensei Mullen began his study of martial arts at the age of eighteen. On a dare from a friend he attended a Japanese Karate class at Orange Coast College in Southern California. It took no time at all for Mullen to get hooked on the rigorous forms, basics, and sparring of this class. Tournament point sparring and forms competition victories came quickly from his five days a week training regimen. At that point he resolved to make martial arts a life long pursuit.

Sensei Scott MullenHe began an eclectic journey that taught him the strikes of Karate, the fluidity, rooting and listening skills of Tai Chi Chuan, the speed and efficiency of Jeet Kune Do, and finally the suppleness, strength, and power of the Shinsho system. It was at the Allen Academy where the past seeds of other systems sprang into full flower. All of his past experiences linked together through the tutelage of Headmaster Allen to create a more complete martial artist.

Teaching is a natural progression after twenty-five years experience in the martial arts. Sensei Mullen is currently an eighth grade English Language arts teacher in Southern California. He also has twelve years experience in teaching Yang Tai Chi Chuan with the City of Corona Parks and Recreation. Knowing that great challenge leads to great skill has prompted Sensei Mullen to open his own academy in the Redlands area.

The most important part of Sensei Mullen’s success is the support of his wife and family. His wife and sons are currently students at the Allen Academy. Without them he would not have the time or positive energy to progress in his art. Family is at the heart of his commitment to the academy.
